Ten Great Comedies of the 2010’s

Ten Great Comedies of the 2010’s 1080 1920 Forest City Film Festival
Over the past ten years, a lot of fantastic comedies have been released. My weird sense of humor has definitely drawn me in to a lot of strange movies that I found to be absolutely hilarious. These comedies range from mainstream cineplex level comedies, to small indies, to foreign films with an absurd twist. Here are ten great comedies of the past ten years.

Another strange one here, THE SQUARE is a Swedish arthouse film about stupid and strange happenings around an art gallery. If you think a man pretending to be an ape and destroying a fancy gala dinner as part of a performance art act sounds funny, or if you find modern art to be dumb in general, this movie will tickle your funny bone.

ANOTHER weird one here. I promise, it gets more normal from here. A PIGEON SAT ON A BRANCH REFLECTING ON ITS EXISTENCE is an absurd movie about life and death told in a collection of really weird scenes.

The list gets pretty normal from here on in. THE WORLD’S END is the spiritual sequel to British comedies, SHAUN OF THE DEAD and HOT FUZZ. This film is action packed, sharp, and extremely dry and British.

THE BEACH BUM is like a big warm hug from a lice infested grifter. This movie follows Matthew McConaughey playing the quintessential stoner, as he drifts through life unaware. If it doesn’t work for you in the first 15 minutes, it won’t work, but if it works, buckle in for a hilarious, absurd ride. And the dolphins scene, there’s truly nothing better.

DEADPOOL was popular for good reason. Cheeky, raunchy, childish, and way over the top, this movie satirized the superhero genre brilliantly, playing perfectly on all of the expected tropes with a sharp and very rude sense of humor. Ryan Reynolds has become a comedy icon based on this movie, and no matter how many 6 UNDERGROUNDs he releases, he’ll always have DEADPOOL.

This movie was almost made into an American movie with Jack Nicholson and Kristen Wiig, but the original German film remains a perfect example of a movie that doesn’t need a remake. TONI ERDMANN is a heartfelt and artsy comedy about a father who has driven his daughter away with his addiction to pulling ridiculous pranks. It’s funnier than you would expect from all of the critical acclaim and prestigious awards around it.

The PADDINGTON movies are the child of Buster Keaton styled stunts, with Wes Anderson visual humor, and a wry, British wit. In other words, both movies are wonderful, but my personal favorite is the first one.

Martin Scorsese’s 187 minute epic of excess and crime is as funny a movie as they come. While telling an exciting story about wall street excess, it also packs in plenty of humor in the wild situations that these people get into. Still, it condemns all of the actions within, by pointing out how stupid all of it is, and having a lot of fun along the way.

No movie of this decade is more quotable than Taika Waititi’s vampire mockumentary WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS, in which 3 very silly vampires live in a New Zealand home together. The movie takes everything we know about vampires and flips it on its head to provide a simply brilliant satire.
